Ingredients and Substitutions
There’s a printable recipe card below for this easy pigs in blankets recipe with the full quantities. But here are the main ingredients and ideas for any swaps.
- Chipolatas: I use gluten free pork chipolatas because in my eyes, the bigger the pigs in blankets, the better! There are lots of brands of gluten free sausages in UK supermarkets so these should be easy to find. If you prefer to use cocktail sausages, you’ll need to cut the bacon rashers in half (use half per sausage) and reduce the cooking time by around 10 minutes.
- Streaky Bacon: I prefer smoked bacon for these, but unsmoked also works fine.
- Rosemary: Fresh sprigs are best (and nicer for presentation!) but you can also use dried rosemary. Swap for sage or thyme if you prefer.
- Honey: Or use maple syrup if you would rather.
- Gluten Free Worcester Sauce: You can usually find this in the free from aisle, or use Henderson’s Relish instead. Not all Worcester Sauce is gluten free – I have a handy guide to gluten free condiments and Coeliac UK has a downloadable product list too.
- Wholegrain Mustard: Double check, but this is usually gluten free. You can use dijon if you don’t like the texture of wholegrain.

How to Make The Best Pigs in Blankets
There’s a printable recipe card below with the method. But here are some step-by-step photos to show you how easy these gluten free pigs in blankets are to make.

How To Make Pigs in Blankets Ahead Of Time
If you want to save time on Christmas Day, you can easily prepare these a day or two before (or even months in advance, then freeze them) to help yourself out!
Follow the recipe steps to make up the pigs in blankets the night before, arrange them on a baking tray and refrigerate them ready to pop straight into the oven.
Or you can freeze them (raw) on a baking sheet so they don’t stick together, then decant into a bag or tub to store in the freezer.
To cook straight from frozen, add an extra 5-10 minutes to the total cooking time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some FAQs about this easy chipolata pigs in blankets recipe. If you can’t find the answer to your question here or in the post above, please comment and I’ll try answer!
Yes, you can! To do this, firstly ensure you can find some gluten free cocktail sausages. Cut the bacon rashers in half (use half per sausage) and reduce the cooking time by around 10 minutes. They should work just as well!
Yes, you can! I tend to make these in the oven as I like to cook a biiig batch – they will need to be spaced out in the air fryer so this is better for a smaller batch.
To air fry the pigs in blankets, spray the basket with a little oil to stop them sticking.
Spread the bacon-wrapped-sausages in the basket in an even layer and air fry at 200C (392F) for 15-20 minutes, before adding the honey and mustard marinade. Toss to coat and air fry for another 2-3 mins at 200C.
If cooking a large amount, you might need to do this in batches to ensure they cook properly – if they are squished together the bacon won’t crisp up.
Leftover pigs in blankets can be kept in the fridge and eaten cold or reheated. Try them in my Christmas Mac and Cheese or my Boxing Day Hash recipes! You can also freeze them – I recommend defrosting them in the fridge overnight before reheating in an oven or air fryer.
Pigs in Blankets Recipe
Equipment
Ingredients
- 12 gluten free pork chipolatas
- 12 streaky bacon rashers, (I prefer smoked)
- 2 springs fresh rosemary, (finely chopped, or use 1 tsp dried rosemary)
- 2 tbsp runny honey
- 1 tbsp gluten free Worcester sauce
- 1 tsp wholegrain mustard
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 220C / 200C Fan / Gas Mark 7.
- Run the sharp edge of the knife along the bacon rashers (one-at-a-time) to stretch them out. I picked this tip up from Jamie Oliver – it helps them crisp up!
- Starting at one end, wrap each piece of bacon around a chipolata, so the entire length is wrapped. Place them on a baking tray with a little space between them and sprinkle with the rosemary.
- Roast the pigs in blankets for 25 minutes, until the chipolatas are cooked through and the bacon is just starting to crisp. Meanwhile, mix the honey, mustard and Worcester sauce together in a small bowl.
- After 25 minutes, remove the tray from the oven. Pour over the marinade and toss the chipolatas so they are coated. Place back in the oven for 5 minutes, then serve straight away. Drizzle any excess marinade on top to serve.
Notes
- Storing: Any leftovers of these pigs in blankets can be stored in the fridge. Enjoy them cold or reheat in the oven or air fryer. You can also freeze them.
- Air Fryer? To make these in the air fryer, place the pigs in blankets in the basket (you may need to do this in batches so they are not crammed in – give them space!) and air fry at 200C for 10-15 mins until crisp and cooked through. Pour in the marinade, toss to coat and air fry for another 2-3 mins at 200C.
