My Top Tips For Successful Gluten Free Salads!

  • For easy meal prep: Make up 2-3 salads in one go, and then either portion them up or keep them in bowls in the fridge for an easy lunch option through the week.
  • For pasta salads: Make sure you invest in using a decent gluten free pasta, as some of the cheaper supermarket brands can go hard when cold. I have suggestions for my favourite brands in the individual recipes.
  • Store dressings separately: For some salads which are leaf-heavy, such as my Rocket Salad or La Scala Chopped Salad, I recommend storing the salad and dressings separately, if you want them to last over a few days. Mix to serve.
  • Keep It Coeliac-Safe: Always ensure you prepare and store all gluten free food separately from any gluten-containing ingredients. Be careful of commonly-used, gluten-containing grains such as bulgar wheat and couscous. And always check your dressings! Some contain wheat or barley, so are not gluten free. Of course – all my recipes are, and any potential ‘may contain’ items are highlighted.

1. Gluten Free Pesto Pasta Salad

A bowl of gluten free pesto pasta salad with serving spoons.

This Gluten Free Pesto Pasta Salad is one of my favourite dishes for a barbecue side dish.

The pesto mayonnaise dressing is so easy to whip up (you can use shop-bought or homemade pesto) and is easy to make dairy or egg-free too.

It has all sorts of interesting textures with crispy bacon, chickpeas, crunchy red onion, fresh spinach and creamy mozzarella balls.

2. Big Mac Salad

I always make this Big Mac Salad when I need a quick and easy dinner. It’s like all the best bits of a McDonald’s without the burger bun – and completely gluten free.

The seasoned mince sits on a bed of shredded iceberg lettuce, topped with melted burger cheese, homemade Big Mac sauce, onions and gherkins.

It’s the perfect dinner that’s ready in 15 minutes and tastes insanely good!

3. Crispy Rice Salad

I don’t always jump on board with viral recipes but I got a bit addicted to this Crispy Rice Salad once I tried it!

You can crisp up the rice in the oven or air fryer and it contrasts amazingly with the refreshing coriander, cucumber and edamame beans.

Plus the peanut butter dressing is out of this world – I always make extras to top my other salads with!

4. Peach and Halloumi Salad

If you love a sweet-and-salty combination like I do, you have to try this Peach and Halloumi Salad. It’s just so easy.

You only need 4 ingredients and you’ll want to scoff the whole bowl – it’s filled with all the best fresh, summer flavours.

I think this would be a great dish for a barbecue side, and you can also make the hot honey yourself too, for an extra special touch!

5. Mexican Corn Salad

This Mexican Corn Salad is the one recipe my family always requests when we have a barbecue! And I absolutely love it.

It’s probably the salad recipe I’ve made more than any other, partly because it’s so quick and partly because it’s so GOOD.

Tinned sweetcorn, tomatoes, onion, feta and jalapeños are tossed with a smoky dressing and fresh coriander for a flavour explosion. It’s hard to not scoff it all from the bowl!

6. Chickpea and Halloumi Salad

My easy Chickpea and Halloumi Salad is so loved by readers, it even made it into my cookbook, Delicious Gluten Free Meals.

It’s a really lovely salad you can enjoy warm or cold (I prefer it warm!) and works well as a side dish or a whole meal.

Quinoa is such a great addition to gluten free salads and with punchy rocket and salty halloumi this one is an absolute gem I make time-and-time again.

7. Gluten Free Greek Pasta Salad

A bowl of Greek Pasta salad with red onions, olives, feta, tomato and cucumber.

A good Greek Salad is one of my favourite things to eat when the sun comes out, so it seemed only natural to turn it into a gluten free Greek Pasta Salad!

This recipe has got all the best bits of a Greek salad with a tangy Greek yoghurt dressing, mixed with gluten free pasta.

It works well as a side dish or also as a lunchbox staple. I like to serve mine up with some grilled chicken!

8. Beetroot Salad

A bowl of beetroot, feta and walnut salad with serving spoons.

Vibrant in colour and rich in flavour, this easy Beetroot Salad is always a great talking point at any dinner table!

Roast your beetroot (or buy it pre-cooked for a shortcut, just make sure to avoid any in malt vinegar!) and then toss with walnuts, feta, chickpeas and a balsamic dressing.

I love this salad warm or cold and it keeps really well in the fridge for a few days too, though it goes completely pink!

9. Easy Rocket Salad

This 2-minute Rocket Salad is always my go-to when you need a simple side salad for any meal.

Just serving up a heap of leaves can seem boring but the punchy rocket (or arugula, for my US readers) pairs so well with the sweet balsamic dressing.

I like to keep a bag of rocket, some parmesan and a little tub of the dressing on hand in the fridge, ready for emergencies!

10. Chicken Bacon Caesar Salad

Gluten free chicken caesar salad in a serving bowl.

Making a Chicken Bacon Caesar Salad at home always makes me feel like I am having a restaurant dinner in my own kitchen.

It’s easy to make the homemade Caesar dressing (make extras for the week too!) and it’s paired with tender chicken, crispy bacon, and a bed of crunchy lettuce.

And of course, don’t forget the gluten free croutons too – the perfect way to use up any holey gluten free bread!

11. Gluten Free Tabbouleh

A bowl of gluten free tabbouleh with lemon slices on top.

I wish I had discovered Gluten Free Tabbouleh sooner, because it’s so easy to make, keeps really well over a few days for meal prep, and is absolutely delicious.

I use quinoa as a gluten free base for mine, as traditional recipes using bulgar wheat which is not gluten free.

The zesty lemon dressing and zingy herbs, with crunchy cucumber and tomato, is just so perfect on a hot day!

12. La Scala Chopped Salad

A bowl of La Scala salad with lettuce, shredded mozzarella, salami and chickpeas with a wooden serving spoon.

This simple, La Scala Chopped Salad is one of those unassuming dishes that is actually super tatsy and filling.

Shredded lettuce makes up the base with mozzarella, salami, chickpeas, and a delicious lemon and garlic dressing.

I love making this for a big lunch bowl – if making ahead of time, I’d add the dressing just before serving to avoid any soggy lettuce!

13. Gluten Free Chicken Bacon Pasta Salad

A bowl of chicken and bacon pasta salad.

If you want a light meal that feels a bit more substantial, this Chicken and Bacon Pasta Salad recipe is perfect.

It reminds me of all the pasta salads I see in the lunchtime meal deals, except this one is made using gluten free pasta.

Sweetcorn and spring onion add some veggie texture to the dish and it’s in a creamy and tasty mayonnaise dressing. Your new lunchbox staple!

14. Gluten Free Couscous Salad

A bowl of couscous salad with turkey, tomato, cucumber, pistachios and cranberries.

Fans of a warm salad will love this Gluten Free Couscous Salad, made using maize couscous from the free from aisle.

I actually created this as a Thanksgiving side or leftovers recipe, using cranberries, pistachios and cooekd turkey.

But to be honest this would be just as delicious on a summer platter, and you could can swap the turkey for chicken, or just omit it for a veggie version.

15. Potato Salad

Potato salad recipe gluten free BBQ side

I absolutely swear by my Potato Salad recipe and I stand by the fact this is the BEST dressing for it ever!

I always add chopped boiled eggs to mine and use spring onions to lift it, while the apple cider vinegar adds a great tang to the mayonnaise dressing.

If you want to go to a barbecue and everyone praise the side dish you bring, this is an absolute classic choice.

16. Watermelon Feta Salad

A watermelon and feta salad with fresh mint.

Sometimes the beauty of a salad is in its simplicity, and that is certainly true of this Watermelon Feta Salad.

Chunks of refreshing watermelon are the perfect pairing for salty feta, tossed with fresh mint leaves.

Serve a bowl of this up and everyone will absolutely love it, it’s just the perfect antidote to a hot day.

17. Greek Salad

A bowl of Greek Salad.

A Greek Salad is just the GOAT of all the salads, and I have the best hack for making the dressing extra tasty.

The key to making a next-level Greek Salad is to mush some of the feta into the lemon and oregano dressing using a fork.

Of course, you still add chunks of feta to the cucumber, tomato, onion and olive base, but this really does elevate it and will keep your dinner guests wanting more.
