Ingredients and Substitutions

There’s a printable recipe card for this hot honey recipe below. You only need 3 ingredients to make this – it couldn’t be any easier!

  • Honey: Any runny honey works perfectly for this recipe. For a vegan version you could use maple syrup instead.
  • Chilli Flakes: Also known as red pepper flakes in the US. Making this hot honey with dried chilli flakes helps it keep for longer and gives it a lovely red speckle.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: You can also use white wine vinegar or lemon juice, this just complements the sweet honey and helps it last longer too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some FAQs about this easy hot honey recipe – if you can’t find the answer to your question here or in the post above, please comment and I’ll try answer!

What is hot honey?

Hot honey is a condiment which has become really popular recently. It’s essentially honey simmered with chilli flakes, so you get a sweet and spicy sauce you can drizzle on anything from fried chicken to pizza. Trust me, the hot and sweet combination is so delicious – and dangerously addictive!

Can I just buy hot honey?

You can buy hot honey but making your own is so easy – and cheaper! Some gluten free hot honeys include Hilltop Hot Honey, Habanero Hot Honey and Scotch Bonnet Hot Honey. Making your own uses fewer ingredients and is less processed.

What is hot honey used for?

Hot honey is used to drizzle on foods like pizza, fried chicken or halloumi. You can use it on salads, drizzle over pasta dishes or even use it to dip your crusts. I’ve even seen people have it on ice-cream! Honestly, the choice is endless, and I’ve included lots of suggestions in the post above, if you need some inspiration.

Have you tried this recipe?

I have a huge favour to ask! It’s getting more and more difficult to get my recipes out there to the world – so if you try this and love it, it would mean a HUGE amount if you’d come back and leave a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review and a little comment telling me what you thought! Just 30 seconds of your time would be such a huge support! 💛

Hot Honey Recipe

This homemade hot honey is the perfect blend of sweet and spicy! Just 3 ingredients and 15 minutes is all you need for this flavoursome condiment. Use it on fried chicken, pizza, or as a gift!
Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 5 minutes
Total: 15 minutes
Servings: 15 servings

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 400 g honey
  • 3 tbsp chilli flakes
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  • Pour the honey into a saucepan, add the chilli flakes and stir to mix together. Place on a low heat and bring the honey to a simmer.
  • Remove the honey from the heat, stir well and leave to stand for 10 minutes. This will let the honey really absorb the chilli flavour! NOTE: For a more intense heat, leave for longer, at least 30 minutes.
  • Drain the honey through a fine sieve into a clean jar, then add the apple cider vinegar and mix well. Cool to room temperature, seal with a lid and store (see notes below).

Notes

  • Storage: Once cooled to room temperature, store the honey in a sealed jar for up to 3 months. You can also keep the hot honey in the fridge but its not necessary.
  • Cup Measurements: This recipe uses a 400g (14oz) jar of honey – if you want this in cups it equates to approximately 1 cup + 3 tbsp.
  • Step-by-Step Photos: Check out the blog post above for step-by-step photos of this method if you find it easier to follow a visual guide.
  • Like this Recipe? It would mean SO much to me if you could leave a 5* rating and a little comment if you make this Hot Honey recipe and love it. It really helps support my blog and get the recipe out there to more people! Thank you xx
