It’s time for pumpkin spice and all things nice – welcome to October! Not only is this the month we can get all spooky with our Halloween bakes, it’s also pumpkin season galore and a chance to move to cosy comfort foods like pies, stews, curries and one-pan tray bakes. Welcome to cosy season!

What’s in season for October?

In the UK, October sees us move towards hearty root vegetables, squash and pumpkins, dark leafy greens and fruits like apples and pears. There may be a few summer berries hanging in there if you’re lucky.

For October vegetables look for root vegetables such as carrots, swede, turnips, beetroot and celeriac, plus potatoes. Leeks, cauliflower and broccoli come into season and you let’s not forget October favourites, squash and pumpkin!

For October fruits we’re in the peak of apple and pear season, perfect for pies and crumbles. You may find the last of the raspberries and blackberries, and you can also find nuts like hazelnut and chestnuts too.

And let’s not forget spooky season! Make the most of fun Halloween bakes and leftover pumpkin recipes too this October.

Below are recipes using some of my favourite seasonal fruit and veg for October. Thinking ahead to next month? Check out my November recipes next!

My favourite gluten free recipes for October: Of course I love going a bit pumpkin mad with Gluten Free Pumpkin Bread (so cosy) and Pumpkin Roll (the best dessert!), plus fun spooky bakes like Monster Cupcakes and Halloween Donuts. For mains I’m serving up cosy soups like Roasted Pumpkin Soup and Gluten Free Chicken Soup, plus cosy mains like Chilli Con Carne and Butternut Squash Pasta.
