Notes On This Minced Beef and Onion Pie Recipe

  • What Is Minced Beef Pie? Minced Beef and Onion Pies are a classic British recipe, once enjoyed widely by the working class – hence why it now makes a fantastic budget meal! Unlike a gluten free cottage pie, this is a pie in the truest sense, with a pastry crust encasing minced beef, onion and a rich beef gravy.
  • Pastry Of Choice: Finding ready made gluten free shortcrust pastry is difficult in the UK, but my tried-and-tested gluten free pastry recipe is SO easy, you’ll be surprised! It’s absolutely worth the effort and you can always freeze any excess.
  • Serving Suggestions: Personally I love to serve a gluten free beef mince pie with either cheesy mashed potato or a good serving of crispy oven chips. And of course, lashings of extra gluten free gravy too!

Ingredients and Substitutions

There’s a printable recipe card below for this gluten free minced beef and onion pie with the full quantities. But here are the main ingredients and ideas for any swaps.

  • Gluten Free Pastry: I always use my homemade gluten free pastry recipe as it’s really simple to make using gluten free flour, butter, eggs and xanthan gum. You can buy some gluten free ready made pastry from Ocado or Baked To Taste but I’ve not tested them. I definitely recommend making your own!
  • Minced Beef: I use a 12% beef mince – you could use a leaner one but a fattier beef mince will give a much better flavour, and be cheaper.
  • Onions: You only need standard brown onions but you could use red onions for a sweeter taste.
  • Garlic
  • Gluten Free Worcestershire Sauce: Make sure you use a free from brand or you could swap this for Henderson’s Relish which is also gluten free.
  • Rich Beef Stock Pot: Ensure your stock pot is gluten free – I use Knorr.
  • Plain Gluten Free Flour: I use the FREEE Plain Gluten Free Flour but any blend would work. This could be swapped for rice flour or cornflour.

Storing and Freezing Instructions

TO MAKE AHEAD: Construct the pie up to 24 hours before baking and refrigerate, or freeze for up to 6 months. To cook from frozen account for extra time to cook the pie so it is hot through – you may need to pop some foil on top to stop it going to brown.

TO STORE: Any leftovers of this gluten free beef mince pie can be kept in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat thoroughly before serving – I recommend doing this in the oven as the microwave makes the pastry go soggy!

TO FREEZE: Any leftovers of this pie can be frozen and then defrosted and reheated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some FAQs about this easy minced beef pie recipe. If you can’t find the answer to your question here or in the post above, please comment and I’ll try answer!

Can I make a minced beef pie with gluten free puff pastry?

Yes, you can! You could make the filling from this recipe, then pop it into a pie tin and top with my gluten free puff pastry. Bake until golden for a flaky top instead!

Can I make this recipe into hand pies or pasties instead?

I’d recommend using my gluten free Cornish pasty recipe as a base, but replace the beef chunks with mince. You could use this filling, but it would be quite wet and difficult to eat as the filling is gravy-heavy. Traditionally pasties have potato in, so this would be a closer match.

Don’t I need to blind bake the pastry before adding the filling?

Often you blind bake pastry when using a very wet filling such as with a gluten free quiche, but this recipe doesn’t need it. You get a lovely, crisp pie crust – no soggy bottoms here, thank you!

Minced Beef Pie Recipe

This gluten free Minced Beef Pie is so simple to make using my homemade gluten free pastry. While the pastry chills make the filling, then construct it and bake for a golden, delicious pie. If you try this and love it, please come back and leave a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review!
Prep: 45 minutes
Cook: 35 minutes
Total: 1 hour 20 minutes
Servings: 4 people

Ingredients

  • 1 batch gluten free shortcrust pastry
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 500 g minced beef, 12% fat
  • 2 onions, finely sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1 tbsp gluten free Worcestershire sauce sauce
  • 1 gluten free rich beef stock pot
  • 300 ml boiling water
  • 2 tbsp plain gluten free flour
  • extra egg for brushing

Instructions

  • First make the gluten free pastry as per the instructions, then chill. Whilst the pastry is chilling you can make your filling.
  • Add the oil to a large, lidded pan and place on a low heat. Add the onions and fry with the lid on, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes so they start to soften.
  • Remove the lid, turn the heat up to medium then add the beef mince and garlic. Cook for a further 5-7 minutes, breaking the mince up with a spatula, until it has browned all over with no pink bits.
  • Add the gluten free flour, stir well and cook for a further minute. Then add the stock pot, boiling water and Worcestershire sauce and mix well. Simmer for 7-8 minutes on a low heat until it starts to thicken.
  • Remove the filling from the heat and set to one side to cool. Preheat the oven to  200C / 180C Fan / Gas Mark 6.
  • Remove the gluten free pastry from the fridge and roll it out to around 3-4mm thick. Use a rolling pin to lift the pastry over the top of the pie dish.
  • Gently press the pastry into the pie dish, and trim the edges. Scrunch the offcuts back together ready to roll the lid and brush the edges of the pie with a little beaten egg.
  • Spoon the beef filling into the pie into one even layer. Roll out the leftover pastry to around 3-4mm thick again, then lift over the top of the pie. Press down the edges using a fork and trim any excess.
  • Cut a slit in the top of the pie (or a small hole/shape – I used a small star-shaped cutter!). Brush the top of the pie with beaten egg. If you like, you can cut shapes from the leftover pastry trimmings to decorate it, sticking them down with some beaten egg.
  • Place the pie in the oven and bake for 35 minutes, until golden on top. Remove from the oven and serve hot.
