Oh September, my favourite season! As we linger between holding onto summer and welcoming that slight autumn chill, I love thinking about cosy bakes, casseroles, curries, and getting the slow cooker back out! This is a great month for seasonal veg and using up the last of the garden glut.

What’s in season for September?

In the UK, September sees the end of the summer harvest such as tomatoes and courgettes, while welcoming the start of the season for apples and pears. Aka crumble season!

Trying to cook gluten free can be expensive, so eating seasonal fruit and veg can be a good way to help reduce costs for the household. And it’s even better when you’ve grown or forages your own!

For September vegetables look for beetroot, early squash and pumpkin, kale, carrots, tomatoes, courgettes, mushrooms, leeks, aubergine, potatoes, radish and herbs like chives and chilli.

For September fruits look for the start of apple and pear season, blackberries, figs, nectarine, plums, rhubarb and strawberries.

Below are recipes using some of my favourite seasonal fruit and veg for September. Thinking ahead to next month? Check out my October recipes next!

My favourite gluten free recipes for September: It’s the start of crumble season (hurrah!) so I’ll obviously be celebrating with a Gluten Free Apple Crumble or Gluten Free Apple and Blackberry Crumble, as well as Beetroot Soup (so cosy), Mushroom Biriyani (my cheat’s version!), Air Fryer Jacket Potatoes (for an easy lunch) and my Halloumi, Aubergine and Chickpea Traybake (for a one-pan dinner).
