The BEST Roast Potatoes In The Air Fryer!

  • So Simple! You only need 3 ingredients to make roast potatoes in the air fryer: potatoes, vegetable oil and salt. You can add some extra garlic cloves or a few sprigs of rosemary for extra flavour, or just keep them simple.
  • Which Potatoes Are Best? I always opt for a floury potato like King Edwards or Maris Piper (in the UK). In the US use Yukon Golds or Russet potatoes.
  • Budget-Friendly: Making roast potatoes in the air fryer is much cheaper and quicker than in the oven. Perfect if you’re if you’re juggling multiple oven cooking times (and space!) for a big roast dinner like at Christmas or Thanksgiving.
  • Serving Suggestions: Serve them with your favourite roast dinner sides, including gluten free cauliflower cheese, roast chantenay carrots, gluten free stuffing and lots of gluten free gravy.

Top Tips for Perfect Roasties

Before you get into this recipe, here are a couple of tried-and-tested tips that came from my recipe testing I want to share:

  • Don’t Skip Par-Boiling: I find this makes for much fluffier roast potatoes and it’s definitely worth the extra step.
  • Want To Prep Ahead? Follow the recipe steps to par-boil and drain the potatoes. Leave to cool, toss in oil and salt, then lay them out on a flat surface to freeze. Once frozen you can transfer them to a tub or bag, then cook from frozen – just add a few extra minutes to the cooking time.
  • Air Fryer of Choice: You need to ensure these air fryer roast potatoes have plenty of space or they won’t crisp up. Opt for a large drawer air fryer – or use a dual drawer one and spread them across both drawers.

Step 4: Air fry the potatoes until crispy and golden on the outside.

Storing and Freezing Instructions

TO STORE: Any leftover air fryer roast potatoes can be left to cool completely and kept in the fridge for a couple of days. Personal I like to eat them cold (my partner says I am weird!) but you can also reheat them in the air fryer or turn them into a leftovers recipe like my Boxing Day Hash or in my Christmas Leftovers Pie.

TO FREEZE: There are two options for freezing these to get ahead. Option 1: Parboil, the potatoes and drain, then toss in oil and freeze on a baking sheet (before transferring to a bag or tub) to air fry from frozen. Or, Option 2: freeze them once cooked and then reheat in the air fryer to serve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some FAQs about this easy air fryer roast potatoes. If you can’t find the answer to your question here or in the post above, please comment and I’ll try answer!

Do I have to parboil my potatoes before air frying?

I always recommend parboiling your potatoes before roasting them, whether it is in the oven or air fryer. Boiling them enough that the edges soften means you can ruffle them up in the colander – and that is what gets the super crispy edges!
If you want an air fryer potato recipe you don’t have to parboil first, try my Air Fryer Baby Potatoes or Air Fryer Hasselback Potatoes instead.

How long to cook roast potatoes in air fryer?

I recommend after parboiling, to cook your potatoes for around 30 minutes in the air fryer, for delicious crispy roasties. If you have smaller potatoes, you may need less time. And if you have extra large roast potatoes, you may need to cook them for an extra 5-or-so-minutes before they are cooked through. This recipe is based off of roast potatoes approximately 2-inches in size.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 kg Floury Potatoes, (Maris Piper or King Edward)
  • 1-2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 pinch salt flakes

Instructions

  • Peel the potatoes and cut them into large chunks, all equal in size. Any small potatoes can be left whole.

  • Drain the potatoes into a colander, shake them gently to rough up the edges a little (helps makes them extra crispy!) and cover with a tea towel. Leave to steam dry in the colander for 5 minutes.
  • Add the drained potatoes to an air fryer basket, drizzle over the oil and sea salt then toss to coat. Make the sure the potatoes are spread in one even layer with some space between them – otherwise you may have to cook them in batches.
  • Air fry at 190C (374F) for 30 minutes, turning them half way through cooking. They should be gorgeously golden brown on the outside and fluffy inside. Serve hot with your favourite meats and veg.
