This Creamy Sausage and Potato Soup is pure comfort food in a bowl, with delicious sausagemeat, tender potato chunks, flecks of kale and a creamy garlic broth. An indulgent but surprisingly light meal which is completely gluten free and great for batch cooking!

Notes On My Sausage and Potato Soup Recipe

This Creamy Sausage Gnocchi Soup is easy to whip up in under 30 minutes.
It’s perfect for batch cooking – I kept mine in a fridge and had a portion daily for a week!
My favourite way to eat this is with a side of gluten free doughballs for dunking, or slices of a of crusty, gluten free baguette for mopping up the rich, garlic broth.
For something different, swap the chunks of potato for gluten free gnocchi instead. It will need a lot less cooking though if you do this – just five minutes instead of 10 (at recipe step 4).

Ingredients and Substitutions
There’s a printable recipe card below for this sausage and gnocchi soup recipe with the full quantities. But here are the main ingredients and ideas for any swaps.
- Gluten Free Pork Sausages: If you can get a sausage which is more Italian flavoured or garlicky, this is my favourite for this recipe. I love the Sainsbury’s Toulouse ones or the M&S Italian sausages, both of which are gluten free.
- Potato: Any potato works (even sweet potato, if you fancy it) but I tend to use a floury potato like King Edward (UK) or Russet (US).
- Onion and Celery: These form the base of the soup – I’d recommend using both for maximum flavour, but you could use one or the other.
- Garlic: I use garlic paste but you could use chopped, frozen or fresh minced garlic.
- Italian Seasoning: Mostly these are gluten free but double check – it should typically be a mix of rosemary, thyme, basil, oregano and garlic; some have red pepper flakes.
- Chicken Stock: Use a gluten free stock pot, chicken bone broth, or your own homemade chicken stock. You can also swap for vegetable stock if you prefer.
- Kale: Or any green leaf like spinach, cavolo nero spring greens would work.
- Double Cream: Or heavy cream in the US.

How to Make Sausage and Potato Soup
There’s a printable recipe card below with the method. But here are some step-by-step photos to show you how easy this creamy potato and sausage soup recipe is to make.

Storing and Freezing Instructions
TO STORE: I found this keeps in the fridge for 4-5 days, and then you can just portion off a bit to reheat when you need it.
TO FREEZE: You can freeze this soup, but you may find the potatoes go a bit mushy when defrosted. If that doesn’t bother you, go ahead!

Creamy Sausage and Potato Soup Recipe
Equipment
Ingredients
- 6 gluten free pork sausages, (Italian or Garlic ones are the best!)
- 1 onion, very finely chopped
- 2 sticks celery, very finely chopped
- 2 tsp garlic paste
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- 400 g potato, cut into 1-2cm cubes
- 1200 ml chicken stock
- 85 g chopped kale, leaves only
- 100 ml double cream
- 2 tbsp olive oil
Instructions
- Remove the skins from the sausages and use a sharp knife to roughly chop the meat.
- Add the olive oil to a large, lidded pan, place on a medium-high heat. Add the sausage meat and cook (using a spatula to break it up) until it is browned – approx 5 mins.
- Add the onions, celery, garlic and Italian seasoning. Fry for another 5-6 minutes until softened.
- Add the potato cubes and stir well. Pour in the hot chicken stock and bring to the boil. Turn down to a simmer, place the lid on the pan and simmer for around 10 minutes until the potato is cooked through.
- Remove the lid, add the cream and kale and stir well. Place the lid back on for another minute until the kale is wilted, then serve.
Notes
- This soup will keep for up to a week in the fridge. You can freeze it but you may find the potato falls apart a bit, so probably best made fresh with less quantities, if you think you’ll have too much!
- For variations, try swapping the potato for gluten free gnocchi and reducing the simmer time to 5 minutes. You could also add some canned white beans or butter beans with the kale for extra bulk and texture!
