If you’re after a new healthy staple for your lunch or dinners, you have to try my maple za’atar sweet potatoes.

With a gorgeously crunchy coating and sweet drizzle of maple syrup, these are incredible hot or cold.

Za’atar is one of my favourite spice blends as it adds both texture and taste and it pairs perfectly with roasted sweet potatoes.

You can eat these maple za’atar sweet potatoes hot or cold, have them alongside chicken, salmon, a medley of veg or even in a salad.

Once you try these roasted sweet potatoes you’ll wonder why you never had them before!

What is za’atar?

If you haven’t tried za’atar in your meals before then you absolutely must!

I first discovered it at a cookery event I attended a few years back in London.

Za’atar is a Middle Eastern spice blend, usually combined of oregano, thyme and marjoram, with sumac and toasted sesame seeds.

This means not only do you get the fragrance and gentle spice, but also a delicious crunch from the seeds.

There are so many ways to use za’atar and I always love sprinkling it on salads.

But combining it with the sweetness of the potatoes and maple syrup, plus extra sesame seeds, is what makes this dish so special.

I use a supermarket own blend of za’atar (in this case Sainsbury’s, but I have also had the Waitrose one which is very nice) and is found with the other spices.

It’s also pretty simple to create your own and there are plenty of recipes out there if you want to give it a try or cannot find the premade mix.

Is Za’atar gluten free?

Like all spice mixes, it’s always best to check the label before assuming they are gluten free.

Most supermarket za’atar mixes I have found have been gluten free.

However some either have wheat flour added to them, or a ‘may contain traces of’ type warning.

It’s always best to double check the ingredients of your za’atar mix before buying.

To be on the safe side you can also join Coeliac UK and download their gluten free food checker app.

This scans the barcodes of products and tells you if they are gluten free or not.

It’s ideal if you’re new to gluten free or not confident reading ingredients lists – it can be confusing sometimes!

What would you serve these with?

These maple za’atar sweet potatoes are delicious hot or cold and go well with a multitude of dishes.

You might want to whip up a big bowl as a side dish for a barbecue or picnic – they make a lovely alternative (or addition to!) potato salad.

They also go really well with grilled or roasted meat (like these Greek-style chicken kebabs).

The maple flavours pair really well with salmon – I prefer to poach or fry mine, have serve it simply with a mound of these sweet potatoes.

Or to carry on the Middle Eastern theme, you could serve them up with my stuffed spicy aubergines for a za’atar-themed feast!

They’re also fantastic as the main star in a salad bowl, and even better with a side of grilled halloumo.

I like to make a big batch up for dinner and then save any leftovers for a salad bowl the next day.

What ingredients do you need?

Making these gluten free za’atar sweet potatoes really couldn’t be simpler.

There’s a full printable recipe card below with the method but for the shopping list you’ll need:

  • 2 large sweet potatoes
  • 2 tsp za’atar
  • 2 tsp sesame seeds
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1-2 tbsp maple syrup
  • Sea salt flakes

And that really is it!

As I said before, the za’atar can be picked up in the supermarket, as can all the other bits you need.

You can omit the maple syrup if you don’t like the sweetness – I think it really adds to the flavour but they’re also delicious without it.

I love this recipe because it’s naturally gluten free, dairy free and even vegan.

It means everyone can enjoy it, whether it’s the main dish or just a tasty side plate.

MAPLE ZA'TAAR SWEET POTATOES

Maple Za'atar Sweet Potatoes

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 35 minutes
Total Time: 45 minutes

These maple za'atar roasted sweet potatoes are the best side dish for a salad, barbecue, or roast dinner. They're so versatile and can be eaten hot or cold. This recipe would serve two people as a main or 4 people as part of a serving platter.

Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet potatoes
  • 2 tsp za'atar
  • 2 tsp sesame seeds
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1-2 tbsp maple syrup
  • Sea salt flakes

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200'C / Fan 180'C / Gas Mark 4. Get out a large roasting tin, drizzle a little olive oil in the bottom and set to one side.
  2. Roughly scrub the sweet potatoes and then chop them into large chunks - around 2 inches in size. (You can peel them first if you like but I like to leave the skin on.)
  3. Add the potato chunks to a large bowl. Drizzle over the olive oil and then add the za'atar and sesame seeds. Toss to coat, then pour out into the roasting tin. You want the potato chunks cover the bottom of the tray.
  4. Roast for 30-35 minutes, remove from the oven and drizzle over the maple syrup. Toss the potatoes to coat them in the syrup and then serve hot, sprinkled with a little sea salt.

Notes

  • These potatoes are lovely eaten hot and can be kept in the fridge for up to three days. I wouldn't recommend freezing them as they tend to go a little soggy.
