These Gluten Free Onion Rings are the perfect appetiser or snack, ideally served up with a cold gluten free beer or stacked alongside a gluten free burger! Rings of onion are coated in a light and crispy gluten free batter and fried until golden for a delicious, crunchy treat.

Notes On These Gluten Free Onions Rings
Onion rings are one of those foods you always think you’ll never be able to eat, which is why I was so excited when I nailed this gluten free onion rings recipe.
They’re so easy to make at home with just a few simple ingredients. Plus these are naturally vegan onion rings made without dairy or egg – so no missing out!
The batter is so light and crispy, made using gluten free lager for a true ‘pub grub’ classic. I like to serve mine with a cold gluten free beer – best enjoyed in the sunshine!
These are also perfect loaded into a gluten free beef burger alongside a stack of crispy oven chips. Or serve them with ketchup and garlic mayo for dipping!

Ingredients and Substitutions
There’s a printable recipe card below for these gluten free onion rings with the full quantities. But here are the main ingredients and ideas for any swaps.
- Onions: I use standard brown onions, but you could use a different type if you prefer. Larger onions make better rings – I don’t tend to use the centre of the onion but I save in the fridge and them to add to other recipes.
- Plain Gluten Free Flour: I usually use the FREEE plain flour blend. If using a self-raising flour you don’t need to add the extra baking powder in the recipe.
- Gluten Free Lager: I used gluten free Peroni but any gluten free lager should work this recipe. For an alcohol-free version, use 0% gluten free lager such as Free Dam or swap for sparkling water. The bubbles help create the lightest batter!
- Baking Powder: not all baking powder is gluten free so always double check the recipe. I have a gluten free baking powder guide on my blog to help.
- Paprika: Optional, but this adds extra flavour and colour. Use smoked paprika for more of a BBQ taste, or spicy paprika to make hot and spicy onion rings.
- Vegetable Oil: Or any neutral oil such as rapeseed oil. You need an oil with a high smoking point for deep frying. Something like olive oil won’t work.

How to Make Gluten Free Onion Rings
There’s a printable recipe card below with the method. But here are some step-by-step photos to show you how easy this gluten free onion rings recip is to make.

Storing and Freezing Instructions
TO STORE: Once cooked you can keep these in the fridge for 1-2 days and then reheat to serve – I reheat mine for 5 minutes in the air fryer or a hot oven.
TO FREEZE: Freeze the cooked onion rings in a bag or tub, then just reheat from frozen. I do this in the oven or air fryer in one, even layer, until hot through.

Gluten Free Onions Rings Recipe
Equipment
Ingredients
- 3 large onions
- 250 g plain gluten free flour
- 330 ml gluten free lager, I used Peroni
- 2.5 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp salt
- Approx 1 litre Vegetable Oil, for frying
Instructions
- Peel the onions and chop them into slices, around 1cm thick. Gently separate them into rings.
- Mix the flour, baking powder, paprika and salt together in a large bowl. Mix the lager into the flour mix using a whisk – I find it best to do this in 3-4 batches so it doesn’t fizz up everywhere! Mix well until it’s lump-free then leave to stand at room temperature for 10-15 minutes.
- When ready, fill a pan with approximately 3 inches of oil (approx 1 litre depending on pan size) and heat to 180C (I highly recommend using a thermometer. However if you don’t have one, you can drop a tiny bit of batter into the oil. When ready it should sizzle with a few bubbles – if it does nothing, it’s not hot enough. If it violently sizzles, it’s too hot. But a thermometer is the best way!!)
- Working quickly, dip 4-5 onion rings into the batter, turning to coat completely, then straight into the oil. You don’t want to crowd them in the pan! Fry for approx 45 seconds, then flip and fry for another 45 seconds until golden brown all over. They should be golden brown on each side.
- Remove from the oil using a slotted spoon and onto a plate lined with some sheets of paper kitchen towel to absorb the oil.
- Continue to fry the onion rings in batches – ensure you stir the batter each time (the flour will settle on the bottom otherwise) and keep checking the oil temperature. Once all the onion rings are cooked, serve them and enjoy!
Notes
- Any leftovers can be stored in the fridge or frozen and reheated to serve. I recommend reheating in the air fryer or oven to maintain crispiness!
