French toast is just the ultimate luxury brunch to me – and I love mine golden and crisp, stacked high with berries, yoghurt and lashings of syrup.

Making gluten free French toast is actually super easy and a great way to use up any leftover stale gluten free bread.

Whether you’re having yours for a gluten free breakfast or a tasty dessert, this French toast recipe is so quick to make, you’ll be having it regularly!

It’s a great alternative to gluten free pancakes and is great topped with gluten free granola – or even made with my gluten free chocolate chip brioche.

Why make this recipe?

  • Gluten Free: Made with gluten free bread, this recipe is 100% gluten free and safe for people with coeliac disease. It can also easily be made dairy free.
  • So Quick: Having this easy gluten free French toast on the table in less than 15 minutes.
  • Super Versatile: You can top this gluten free French toast however you like – from fresh berries and yoghurts to lashings of Nutella.
  • Great for Kids: Children will love helping flip the bread in the eggy mixture, and watching it turn golden brown in the frying pan.

Ingredients

To make my gluten free French toast recipe you only need a few simple ingredients:

  • Gluten Free Bread: Any gluten free bread will work though I prefer white bread for French toast. My favourite brands are Schär or Juvela for gluten free French toast or you can even use homemade gluten free bread. This recipe is absolutely delicious with my gluten free chocolate chip brioche!
  • Eggs: I use large UK eggs. You need enough to coat all the gluten free bread so can easily scale this recipe up or down.
  • Milk: If you need a gluten and dairy free French toast you can use any kind of dairy free milk. Almond milk, coconut milk, soya milk or gluten free oat milk all work.
  • Vanilla Extract: This adds a subtle sweetness and flavour to the French toast. Because I like to drown mine in maple syrup, I don’t like the toast itself too sweet. This is just enough.
  • Butter: I use melted butter to cook my French toast. You can use a vegan butter if you need a dairy free version of this recipe.

How to make gluten free French toast

Making gluten free French toast is so simple, I’ve got step-by-step photos below to guide you through the whole process.

To make my gluten free French toast recipe:

Gluten free bread soaking in the egg mixture for French toast.

Add the eggs, vanilla extract and milk to a bowl and whisk together well. Pour the mixture onto a large plate to make it easier to soak the bread.

If you like you can cut the bread into triangles, or leave the slices whole. Take a slice-or-two (whatever will easily sit on the plate without overlapping) and dip into the egg mixture.

The bread soaking in the egg mixture and frying in a pan with butter.

Leave to soak for 10-20 seconds then turn over and repeat. Remove the soaked bread onto a separate plate and keep going until all your bread is soaked in egg mix.

Top tip: Don’t leave the bread soaking for too long, as gluten free bread absorbs moisture quickly and it can end up falling apart. Make sure to shake off any excess egg mixture too.

Melt the butter in a large frying pan or skillet on a medium heat. Once hot, add the bread slices (however many will fit in one layer at-a-time) and fry for 1 minute. Flip and fry for another minute – the bread should be golden on each side. If not, fry a little longer until it is.

Remove from the pan and stack the French toast on a plate, keeping it warm with some foil while you cook the rest. Once it is all cooked, serve with lashings of maple syrup, Greek yoghurt and fresh berries.

Variations:

There are lots of different ways you can vary this gluten free French toast recipe – here are some ideas to try:

  • Dairy Free: To make gluten and dairy free French toast simply use a dairy free milk an fry in a vegan butter. Top with coconut or soy yoghurt.
  • Cinnamon: Add 1 tsp dried cinnamon to the egg mixture before dipping the gluten free bread in for a warm spice.
  • Sweeter: Add either 1 tsp maple syrup (or honey) or 1-2 tsp sugar to the egg mixture for a sweet variation of this French toast.
  • Savoury: To make savoury gluten free French toast, omit the vanilla extract and add a pinch of salt to the egg mixture instead.

Serving Suggestions

Here are some ideas for how to serve my gluten free French toast recipe:

  • Berries and yoghurt: This classic combo is my go-to. I like to dollop some Greek yoghurt onto the French toast then top with raspberries, blueberries and strawberries.
  • Banana French toast: Try frying some slices of banana in the pan alongside the toast then stacking it on top with a drizzle of honey.
  • Chocolate chip French toast: Sprinkle chocolate chips onto your hot French toast to enjoy the melty goodness. Bonus points if you make this with my gluten free chocolate chip brioche for an extra chocolate hit.
  • Nutella French toast: Add a slather or Nutella on top of your French toast – or use it to sandwich two pieced together in a Nutella French toast sandwich!
  • Sweet and Salty: Just like with my fluffy American pancakes, nothing beats the combination of crispy, salty bacon and sweet maple syrup.
  • Savoury option: If you want to enjoy your French toast as a savoury side dish to something like a full English breakfast, just remember to omit the vanilla extract.

  1. Juvela for sale on the high street? Used to get it on prescription then prescriptions were stopped. Will search for it and try your French toast. Brilliant

  2. Condescending. “How to eat your Gluten Free bread” for goodness sake? Open your mouth and bite down.. Easy. How to enhance the experience is something else.
