If you’re in North Devon you must pay a visit to Westward Ho! – not only for the amazing beach but for the fantastic selection of gluten free places to eat.

There are tonnes of gluten free places to eat in Westward Ho! and I highly recommend you tick a few of these off your list.

(Don’t forget I also have a full guide to gluten free in North Devon if you’re travelling around and want a more general overview)

Westward Ho! is a lovely seaside town near Bideford, North Devon, with a long sandy beach, tidal sea pool and the best holiday vibes.

It’s also home to Northam Burrows, which are great for walks, as well as a great starting point for gorgeous coastal walks along the South West Coast Path.

But we all know you’re here for the food, so let’s get to it!

Here are the best gluten free places to eat in Westward Ho!

These are all correct as of July 2021, but obviously things do change so please check before booking that these spots still cater for gluten free.

Tea on the Green

I couldn’t not start this guide with Tea on the Green, the most amazing, gluten free spot in Westward Ho!

This cute little cafe is one of my favourite North Devon spots and has an abundance of gluten free options.

You can get giant gluten free sandwiches, jacket potatoes, toasties and scones – and most of the incredible cakes in their cabinet are gluten free as standard!

Tables here go fast so but you can usually leave your name and number and go exploring and they’ll call when one becomes available.

Find Tea on the Green opposite the green on Golf Links Road.

Atlantic Bay Fish and Chips

Just a few doors up you’ll find Atlantic Bay Fish and Chips, who do gluten free batter on a Monday!

It’s honestly one of the best gluten free fish and chips I’ve ever had, it’s a shame they don’t do it every single evening.

Throughout the rest of the week the chips are all cooked in a separate fryer so you can always get those gluten free.

Find Atlantic Bay Fish and Chips in Golf Links Road.

The Pier House

The Pier House is a gorgeous spot overlooking the ocean and has tonnes of gluten free options, including these yummy nachos!

Their gluten free carvery is amazing (all the gravy is gluten free) and the staff are always super helpful and friendly.

I’ve eaten here loads of times and worked my way through a lot of the menu – they even do gluten free fish and chips.

And if you’re extra lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of dolphins playing in the Atlantic while you enjoy your food.

Find The Pier House at Merley Road.

Morans

Full disclaimer: I am ashamed to say I still haven’t eaten at Morans after years of saying that I must.

BUT I have heard incredible things about their Thai food from both my gluten free and gluten-eating friends.

They seem to be really clued up on gluten free and their food is always super popular with lots of returning customers.

Plus I’ve heard their cocktails are just incredible too. Get an outside spot and you can enjoy them looking out over the ocean too.

Find Morans at Golf Links Road.

Country Cousins

Country Cousins is another restaurant I’ve heard a lot of good feedback about in terms of their gluten free options.

It sounds like they have quite a few veggie and vegan options too, so it’s definitely going on the list of places I need to try.

They are tucked away just a stone’s throw from the beach and do a selection of light bites as well as a Sunday lunch menu.

Find Country Cousins at 3 Westbourne Terrace.

Pig on the Beach

Pig on the Beach is probably one of the best spots to sit on a sunny day, overlooking the village green and ocean beyond.

They have a range of options including a gluten free pie served with mash, root veg and gravy, which sounds so good.

They also offer gluten free pizza bases (haven’t eaten here so can’t comment on if they are coeliac-safe as they have a ‘can’t guarantee’ warning on the menu).

If you’re ordering pizza it’s best to double check with them and see if you’re happy with the cross contamination procesdures.

Find Pig on the Beach at Westward Ho! village green

Pig on the Hill

Just outside of Westward Ho! is Pig on the Hill – the sister pub (and original eatery) of Pig on the Beach.

It’s in a gorgeous location and the food is great – there’s a good range of gluten free options including some epic burgers.

This really is a bit of a hidden gem and somewhere I’d recommend visiting for great pub vibes and an excellent beer garden too.

Find Pig on the Hill in Pusehill Road, Westward Ho!

Other gluten free places to eat in Westward Ho!

There are a few other cafes and eateries in Westward Ho! so it’s worth asking around to see if any others offer gluten free.

And of course, if you do find anywhere, please comment below and let me know so I can add them to this list.

Don’t forget these are all correct as of July 2021 but menus do change all the time so always double check with the server.

  1. We went to the Pig on the Beach and had sensationally good gf fish and chips. My only complaint would be no gf vinegar.

  2. Going to North Devon next week, this list (and the other sin the area) are lifesavers!! PS looks like the Pig on the Hill has permanently closed.
