Well, well, well, my lovely coeliac friends, wasn’t yesterday just a wonderful day with the launch of the long anticipated Domino’s gluten free pizza?

I know there has been a lot of scepticism surrounding contamination issues, but reassured with the fact Domino’s UK has been working closely with Coeliac UK, I was straight down there to order mine after work yesterday.

I ordered a Pepperoni Passion (I am obsessed with pepperoni!!) and sat back excitedly watching the time count down on the order board.

First off, I was pleased to see how they handled my pizza base.

The guy fetched the base and cut it out of a sealed packet. He put it straight onto a clean tray which was on a space of the worktop he had cleaned down.

Impressive.

Separate toppings were used and the pizza was pre cut before going into the oven.

Obviously, in a kitchen where flour is used heavily, there is no guarantee of no contimination, but the risk assessment is down to the individual, and I was satisfied myself that the pizza would be okay for me.

Ten minutes later, I grabbed my little pizza box (gluten free only comes in a small size….this did not please me) and hurried home.

The result looked promising – a deliciously loaded, cheesy, pepperoni-y pizza delight!

At first I was disappointed with how small my pizza looked, but to be honest, I actually struggled to finish it – serious case of eyes-bigger-than-stomach syndrome!

In a word, I would sum this pizza up as…..good.

Ok, you say, why not amazing? Spectacular? Spendiforous??

I really enjoyed this pizza – the base was crunchy and tasty, the toppings were generous and the tomato sauce was not too sweet.

Overall it was a great experience…but the one thing that really put me off…..the price.

These pizzas are so bloody expensive!!

£11.99!!!! SERIOUSLY??????

I wouldn’t even pay that for a full Indian takeaway and I would get a whole lot more food then!

And, to be honest, still don’t come close to the AMAZING Dietary Specials Bonta D’Italia pizza (review here) which I can pick up from Tesco for a third of the price.

So yes, I am over the moon about Domino’s giving me the choice to eat there – and this to me is the most important development.

But at that price, this is going to be a very, very rare treat!

To all those who haven’t tried it yet, I definitely say do it – it’s really tasty and much better than the Pizza Hut one (more to come on THAT one later!) – but maybe just save for the occassional treat unless you’ve got cash to splash – I don’t know how ‘normal’ people afford it!!

  1. That’s such a shame about the price. When I went to Australia to visit family, we ordered Domino’s Pizza and I got the GF version which they’ve had available for ages. It tasted amazing and the price was the same as the others. . My manchild would want a large pizza of his own so that would, at minimum, double the price of our take away. Far too pricey. I don’t have that kind of spare dosh. I’ll just have to wait til he moves out 😉

  2. Hi Sarah, exactly what size were they in inches or centimetres please? Yes, that does seem expensive – is that more or less than a normal pizza from Domino’s as I have never been in one. The nearest is 35 miles away in Barnstaple so unless we are on a shopping trip won’t be going especially. I do know that you can buy the very same bases (made by Glutamel) for £12 including delivery for 8 bases which works out at £1.50 each, to top at home – they have up to 16 weeks shelf life too These are actually 8 1/2 inches in diameter or 22 cm and when topped they are very filling. I am wondering whether these are the same size as they are making for Dominos or what size Dominos normal pizzas are. I do eat a whole one of these when I top it myself (as I did with Juvela’s which I used to get on prescription) but when I have been to cookery demos and the people get asked ‘Who eats a whole pizza? everyone shakes their head and says no, and I feel rather greedy. I have put my hand up before but feel I get frowned at. Is this just me being greedy? Although I have not tried the Pizza Hut one I have read reports about the base being tough (as with Bella Italia) but I believe the Dominos bases would be better.

  3. According to their site, they only use cornflour in their stores (to dust etc) – so other than the dough, there is no wheat flour in the place. Still I’ve already heard of people getting the wrong pizzas… they can put loads of measures in place, but would you trust an underpaid, bored worker to get your order right?

Samantha, I understand from the Domino’s staff who were at the Coeliac UK AGM topping the Glutamel bases for us to sample that yes they do only use cornflour’polenta to dust the normal bases and that the dough for these is not made on the premises – it comes in ready made, as do the gluten free bases arrive in ready made form direct from the manufacturers Glutamel. I understand that all the staff are to be trained properly.

  5. and to think i may $22 for a med at my local pizza joint for GF and all they use for the pie crust is brown rice tortila lol

  6. I got exactly the same but for £6.99 on their small pizza for collection deal, much more bearable and I thought it was totally lush, I can’t wait to have another one! So next time go armed with a deal in mind and pay less, if you don’t ask you won’t get…
