No trip to North Devon is complete without gluten free fish and chips – so I’ve curated a go-to guide to the best gluten free fish and chips in the North Devon area!

Finding gluten free fish and chips can be tricky but there are more-and-more spots popping up, whether it’s a dedicated gluten free eatery, or a special night of the week.

So no matter where you’re visiting in North Devon, here are all the spots to visit to try gluten free fish and chips in Barnstaple, Braunton, Ilfracombe, Westward Ho! and Bideford.

As always, all the information is correct at the time of writing but please do ask your own questions, inform your servers you have coeliac disease and ensure you’re happy with their processes before ordering.

Kate’s Plaice

Where: Various spots around North Devon

What: A 100% gluten free fish and chip van which pops up across various spots in North Devon. They offer so many goodies, from battered fish to halloumi, sausage, scampi and a variety of specials too. Check Facebook for their monthly timetable, which revolves mainly around regular slots in Barnstaple Bideford, Westward Ho!, Parkham and Milton Damerel (near Holsworthy).

South 16

Where: 16 South Street, Braunton, EX33 2AA

What: South 16 now offers gluten free fish and chips every night thanks to the installation of new fryers in 2026! I’m yet to try these but this is great news as even though Squires (the infamous Braunton fish and chip shop in Braunton!) offers gluten free batter, they don’t have dedicated fryers so are not coeliac-safe.

The Pilton Fryer

Where: 94 Pilton Street, Barnstaple, EX31 1PQ

What: The Pilton Fryer does an excellent choice of gluten free, and is always a popular spot with locals. They offer gluten free options every night including battered fish, sausages, gravy, pea fritters and lots of gluten free burgers.

Lynbay Fish and Chips

Where: 6 The Quay, Ilfracombe, EX34 9EQ

What: If you want the ultimate experience of gluten free fish and chips by the sea, Lynbay is the perfect spot. They offer lots of gluten free options that you can enjoy right next to the harbour, just make sure you watch out for the seagulls!

The Pier House

Where: Merley Road, Westward Ho!, EX39 1JU.

What: If you want an option for dining in then The Pier House offers gluten free fish and chips on request (as well as lots of other delicious coeliac-safe foods too). This is a lovely spot for dinner with far-reaching ocean views. We once saw dolphins!

Atlantic Bay Fish and Chips

Where: Golf Links Road, Westward Ho!, EX39 1LH

What: Atlantic Bay offers gluten free fish and chips on Mondays only, though their chips are always gluten free. On other days they offer gluten free grilled fish options, and this is again a wonderful spot to enjoy your fish and chips on the beach!

Finding Coeliac-Safe Fish and Chips:

If you’re ordering gluten free fish and chips, remember to ask the right questions to ensure you feel safe and the food is truly gluten free:

  • Tell your server that you need gluten free food and make sure you inform them you have coeliac disease.
  • Ask about ingredients – ensure all batter, bread, etc, is gluten free.
  • Ask if they use separate fryers for gluten free food (if not, this will not be safe if you have coeliac disease).
  • Make sure to double check sauces – do they have gluten free vinegar? Tartar sauce? Curry sauce?
