Notes On This Slow Cooker Chicken Tagine
🧡 This Slow Cooker Chicken Tagine with Apricots is a ‘dump and go’ slow cooker recipe – no need for precooking or browning anything. Just chuck it all in, turn it on, and let the slow cooker work its magic!
🧡 This easy crockpot tagine is both gluten and dairy free, making it a great option to suit multiple dietary requirements.
🧡 I love making this recipe as part of a weekly meal prep as it’s super freezer friendly. You can portion it up ready with rice or gluten free couscous and then just microwave it from frozen, like a homemade ready meal, but way more nutritious!
🧡 Try mixing this recipe up by swapping the chicken thighs for diced beef, or by adding extra chickpeas to make it vegan, in place of the chicken.

Ingredients and Substitutions
There’s a printable recipe card below for this easy slow cooker chicken tagine with the full quantities. But here are the main ingredients and ideas for any swaps.
- Chicken Thighs: I use skinless, boneless fillets but you could use bone-in. Thighs are better for slow cooking IMO, as chicken breast can dry out.
- Onion and Garlic
- Peppers: Use any colours you like, but I prefer red, yellow or orange in this recipe.
- Chickpeas: You could swap for a different bean if you prefer.
- Ras El Hanout: This is a North African spice mix, made up of a large number of different spices. Find it with your usual spice mixes or on Amazon.
- Tinned Tomatoes
- Vegetable Stock Pot: Be sure to use a gluten free stock – I always use Knorr.
- Dried Apricots: You could omit these if you don’t like them, or use chopped dates.

Storing and Freezing Instructions
TO STORE: Any leftovers of this chicken tagine can be stored in the fridge for 1-2 days. Reheat thoroughly before serving.
TO FREEZE: This chicken tagine can be frozen and reheated to eat. I recommend freezing in portions – sometimes I do this with the rice and gluten free couscous so I can reheat it like a ready meal.
