These gluten free tortilla wraps are soft and flexible, only use 5 ingredients and are super easy to make. Not only that, they’re also dairy free and vegan!

Gluten free flour tortillas are so simple to make and once you try them, you won’t want to buy them ever again.

Plus my simple gluten free wraps recipe only uses five ingredients – plain gluten free flour, psyllium husk, oil, baking powder and water.

They can be thrown together in a matter of minutes and you can make as many or as few as you like.

The gluten free tortillas recipe is completely vegan as well as being gluten free and originally was published in my cookbook, Delicious Gluten Free Meals.

But after demonstrating this recipe at a food festival and seeing how excited you guys were by it, I decided I wanted to share it here for everyone to enjoy.

If you do have my cookbook you’ll find some extra tasty ways to use them, including my Mediterranean Quesadillas and my Cheat’s Chilaquiles.

Plus I have some extra tasty recipes including my tandoori salmon tacos and gluten free quesadillas which would be perfect with these wraps!

Gluten free wraps ingredients

You only need five simple ingredients for this gluten free wraps recipe. And don’t be put off if you’ve never heard of one of them.

I promise these are all super easy to source and absolute worth having in stock!

To make my gluten free wraps recipe you’ll need:

  • Plain Gluten Free Flour – I use a gluten free flour blend such as the Freee plain gluten free flour, M&S flour, Juvela mix or Asda flour. In the US you’ll want an All Purpose flour blend. I’ve not tried this with single flours as this would change the recipe completely!
  • Psyllium Husk – If you’ve never heard of this, don’t be scared! Psyllium husk is a natural, plant-based fibre which looks a little like a seed. But once mixed with water it forms a gloopy gel which gives these wraps their perfect texture! You’ll want to buy whole psyllium husks and ensure they’re gluten free with no may contains. I have used both the Naturale Bio brand and the YourHealthStore brand and both worked really well. You can get them both on Amazon too.
  • Baking Powder – Most baking powder is gluten free but some varieties aren’t – including a supermarket own brand. I’ve listed my favourite gluten free baking powders with a bit more information to help you out.
  • Water – The simplest ingredient of all! I use warm water for this recipe. You may find you need a tiny bit extra on hand as different flour blends have different hydration levels. So some will need a bit extra if the dough is looking very dry.
  • Vegetable Oil – You want a clear and neutral oil for this recipe so I recommend vegetable oil, rapeseed oil or sunflower oil. Anything like olive oil will give the wraps a completely different taste and won’t work as well.

Gluten free wraps FAQs

I’ve written out a full step-by-step method in the recipe card below but I will try and answer any extra questions here!

Are wraps gluten free?

Usually flour wraps are made using wheat flour – unlike traditional Mexican corn tortillas which are usually gluten free.

This recipe is a gluten free version of the common flour tortilla wraps you find in the gluten-filled-aisles.

My wraps recipe is 100% gluten free and safe for people with coeliac disease.

Are these wraps dairy free / vegan?

Yes, not only are these tortilla wraps gluten free, they are also dairy free, egg free and vegan.

The recipe only uses a few simple ingredients which makes it safe for people with multiple allergens without any changes.

And as there are no eggs in the recipe it’s easy to make more or less depending on how many wraps you want.

What can I use these gluten free wraps for?

There are SO many gluten free recipes you can use these for, I’m almost too excited to type them all out!

But to help narrow down the multiple options, here are a few ideas:

  • Wrap up chicken, salad, avocado, pink pickled onions, and whatever other fillings your heart desires into a simple alternative to a sandwich for lunch.
  • Fill them up and make gluten free quesadillas. This can be with any filling you like but I have a cracking Mediterranean Quesadilla recipe in the book I make all the time.
  • Make some fajita chicken, steak, tofu or vegetables and create your own fajita night. Don’t forget the guacamole and soured cream!
  • Whip up a batch of chilli con carne and a pack of rice and make these wraps into gluten free burritos.
  • Top your wraps with marinara sauce, cheese and whatever toppings you like then either air-fry or oven back to create gluten free wrap pizzas.

And if you’ve got any leftover gluten free wraps, you can cut them into triangles and fry them to make gluten free tortilla chips too!

How to make gluten free tortilla wraps

Making these gluten free wraps is super easy and even though I’ve explained it in the recipe card below, I’ll outline the process here.

The first stage is to mix the psyllium husk with warm water to create a gel-like substance.

Once this thickens, add it to your dry ingredients along with the oil and mix together until it becomes a smooth dough.

Divide the mixture up and roll each portion out at time using a rolling pin.

I find it best to do this between sheets of baking paper or clingfilm so it doesn’t stick.

Fry the wraps on each side one-at-a-time, and then wrap them in a tea towel. The steam helps to keep them super soft.

This image below shows you what each step of the process should look like:

My gluten free wraps recipe

This recipe makes 8 wraps but you can easily size the recipe up or down to suit your needs. I’ve even made one wrap on it’s own before!

I recommend cooking these fresh before eating, but they’re so easy to throw together!

The recipe is also in my cookbook, Delicious Gluten Free Meals, and I’ve included a video tutorial in the recipe card below.

Gluten Free Tortilla Wraps

Ingredients

  • 300g gluten free plain flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 250ml warm water
  • 4 tbsp whole psyllium husk
  • 30ml vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Add the gluten free flour, baking powder and salt to a large mixing bowl and stir together.
  2. In a separate bowl add the warm water and then the psyllium husk. Stir well and leave for 1 minute - it should thicken into a gloopy gel.
  3. Pour the psyllium husk/water mixture into the flour and then add the vegetable oil. Use a wooden spoon to bring the mixture together and when it becomes too stiff, use your hands to ‘squish’ it together. It should start to form a ball of kneadable dough - keep going until there is no loose flour left in the bowl.
  4. Divide the dough into 8 pieces (approx 75g each) and roll them into balls. Take the first ball and place it on a sheet of baking paper (wrap the leftovers in a damp tea towel to make sure they don’t dry out).
  5. Place a second piece of baking paper over the top and roll it out in a circle, turning the dough regularly to keep it even, to around 8-inches diameter and 1mm thick. If you want, you can cut around a plate once rolled for a perfect circle and scrunch together any offcuts - this usually makes an extra wrap!
  6. Place a frying pan on a medium-high heat and once hot, transfer the rolled-out dough into it (it should peel off the paper and be easy to handle). Fry for 45 seconds and then flip over, frying for another 45 seconds. The wrap should bubble up a little with some brown spots.
  7. Remove the wrap from the pan and wrap in a clean tea towel. Repeat the process with all of the pieces of dough. Keeping the cooked wraps together in a towel keeps them soft due to the steam. Serve while still warm.
