It’s the most wonderful time of the year, so I thought I’d tackle a question I get asked a lot: which Christmas chocolates are gluten free? Here I’ve answered the popular FAQs about gluten free chocolates as well as provided lists of chocolates which are coeliac-safe.

In the UK there are lots of festive chocolates which are coeliac-safe and I’m listing as many as possible here.

While this list is my no means exclusive, I’ve tried to list the most popular gluten free Christmas chocolates available in the UK.

I’ve also listed some of the common festive treats which are NOT gluten free that I get asked about a lot.

This guide is accurate at the time of writing but PLEASE always double check as ingredients lists and ‘may contain’ warnings change all the time.

And don’t forget if you want more advice, check out my Gluten Free Christmas page as well as my full gluten free Christmas guide and my gluten free advent calendars guide.

I’d also recommend you join Coeliac UK and download their Live Well Gluten Free app ahead of your Christmas shopping.

You can use this to scan scan the barcodes of foods and it will tell you whether they are gluten free or not.

I’ve listed all the FAQs about chocolates I get down below, but here are some at-a-glance lists below this, in case you’re in a hurry!

Gluten free chocolate FAQs

I know I get asked a lot about specific chocolates so I thought I’d try and answer all the FAQs I get here. Don’t forget I’ve listed all the safe gluten free chocolates below too.

Are Quality Street Gluten Free?

Yes, Quality Street chocolates are all gluten free! None of the chocolates in the tins, tubs or bags contain gluten or have any may contain warnings.

This means all of the Quality Street chocolates are safe people with coeliac disease – just save the purple ones for me!

Are Cadbury’s Roses gluten free?

Yes, Cadbury’s Roses are all gluten free and safe for people with coeliac disease. None of the chocolates contain gluten or have a may contain warnings.

Some Cadbury’s products are renowned for having ‘may contains’ but Roses are completely safe.

Are Cadbury’s Heroes gluten free?

Most of the chocolates in the Cadbury’s Heroes tins are gluten free, except for the Dinky Deckers. These contain barley and are not gluten free.

However, the others are safe to eat – so you can just pick these our or gift them to someone else! Just always be careful as the wrappers all look quite similar.

Are Celebrations gluten free?

Out of the 4 main big tubs of chocolates you see in the supermarkets at Christmas, Celebrations are the only ones which are not gluten free.

All of the Celebrations chocolates either contain gluten or have a ‘may contain’ warning, making them unsafe for people with coeliac disease and not gluten free.

Are Lindor chocolates gluten free?

Over the years advice has changed as some of the Lindt products contain barley but are still classed as gluten free.

According to Lindt, any Lindor products where the only gluten-containing cereal is ‘barley malt extract’ are considered gluten free as the levels are below 20ppm.

This means a lot of the Lindor truffles are considered gluten free in the UK and suitable for people with coeliac disease.

The following Lindor truffles are also completely free from any gluten containing ingredients:

  • Lindor White Chocolate Truffles
  • Lindor Strawberries and Cream Truffles

Of course, as Lindt says: “Please always refer to the ingredient list on the product’s packaging for definitive advice.”

Please do always double check as although these are accurate at the time of writing, ingredients may vary and change.

Is Toblerone gluten free?

All of the Toblerone bars are completely gluten free and safe for people with coeliac disease to eat.

This includes the standard Toblerone, Toblerone Golden Caramel and Giant Toblerone.

However, the Toblerone Diamond Truffles have a ‘may contain’ warning for wheat so are unsafe for people with coeliac disease.

Are Malteasers gluten free?

Sadly all Malteasers products are not gluten free as they contain barley and wheat. It’s the barley that gives them their unique flavour – I do miss it so much!

I haven’t yet found a gluten free product that compares to Malteasers.

You can get the Schär Delishios and the gluten and dairy free Doisy and Dam Ballers, but in my opinion they lack that distinctive ‘malt’ flavour.

Are Ferrero Rocher gluten free?

The Ferrero Rocher truffles are not gluten free as they contain wafer which is made from wheat.

However, the chocolate bars (which I’m told taste just like the truffles!) are free from gluten.

The Schär Tempties are a great alternative to Ferrero Rocher as they taste just like them, so would be a great gift for any gluten free person who misses these.

Are After Eights gluten free?

Yes, After Eights are gluten free. They don’t contain gluten and they don’t have any may contain warnings on the packaging.

Is Terry’s Chocolate Orange gluten free?

Sadly for Terry’s fans, while Chocolate Oranges don’t contain gluten in the ingredients, they have a ‘may contain’ warning for wheat.

This means that they are not suitable for people with coeliac disease and not gluten free.

The following chocolates are NOT gluten free

All of these Christmas chocolates either contain gluten or have a ‘may contain’ warning making them unsuitable for people with coeliac disease.

Of course there are a lot of other chocolates which are not gluten free but these are some of the ones I get asked about the most:

  • Ferrero Rocher – these contain wheat
  • Malteasers – any form of Malteasers contain wheat and barley
  • Terry’s Chocolate Orange – has a ‘may contain’ warning
  • Celebrations (they have a cross contamination risk and some contain barley)
  • Tony’s Chocolonely Tiny Christmas Pouch – has a ‘may contain’ warning
  • Thorntons Continental Milk, Dark, White Chocolate Gift Box – has a ‘may contain’ warning
  • Thornton’s Classic – has a ‘may contain’ warning

Of course again, recipes do change so always make sure you double check and remember this list is not exclusive.

Most Cadbury’s products (with a few exceptions) have a ‘may contain’ warning for gluten.

Spotted any more gluten free Christmas chocolates?

There are obviously hundreds (if not thousands) more chocolates around at Christmas but these seem to come up regularly in gluten free forums.

It’s important you always double check the ingredients as these can often change.

This post was last updated in December 2024 so if you’re reading this in the future, be aware recipes may have changed.

If you do spot any more gluten free Christmas chocolates please let me know in the comments below so I can update this list!

    1. Thank you for this helpful list. Regarding Cadbury chocolate products, if they are manufactured in the main Birmingham factory there is a risk of cross-contamination as they also produce cake items. However, a number of items in their range are manufactured in their Ireland factory, which only handles chocolate, and is fine.
