Why I Love These Gluten Free Cheese Bread Rolls

🧀 These gluten free cheese rolls are always my go-to recipe when I was a quick, warm-from-the-oven bread for dunking in a soup or stew.

🧀 They bake in just 30 minutes with no proving needed (they’re yeast free too!) – simply mix everything in a bowl, shape into rolls and bake!

🧀 They’re the perfect combination of my gluten free soda bread and gluten free cheese scones, and are delicious warm or cold.

🧀 These Cheesy Bread Rolls are freezer-friendly so you can batch cook them too!

Ingredients and Substitutions

There’s a printable recipe card below for these gluten free cheese bread rolls with the full quantities. But here are the main ingredients and ideas for any swaps.

Ingredients for gluten free cheese rolls with text labels.
  • Plain Gluten Free Flour: I use the FREEE plain gluten free flour as it’s so widely available in the UK, but any plain gluten free flour blend will work.
  • Xanthan Gum: This is essential for the texture of gluten free bread and helps make the dough more workable. It also makes the finished bread less crumbly.
  • Bicarbonate of Soda: Also known as baking soda in the US. This is the main raising agent in these rolls and what gives them their distinctive flavour.
  • Egg
  • Natural Yoghurt: I find full-fat yoghurt works best. This helps add moisture to the bake and create a soft bread, as gluten free flour is quite thirsty! Use a dairy free yoghurt if needed, such as coconut yoghurt.
  • Milk: I make homemade buttermilk by mixing milk and lemon juice. You can use buttermilk from the shops instead and omit the lemon juice. Use a dairy free milk or choice if needed.
  • Lemon Juice: Apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar also work. This curdles the milk to create your own, homemade buttermilk.
  • Grated Cheddar Cheese: A strong (sharp) Cheddar will create the biggest flavours.

Storing and Freezing Instructions

TO STORE: These gluten free rolls can be kept for up to 3 days in an airtight container, but I recommend warming them to serve. 10-20 seconds in the microwave is perfect or reheat in a warm oven. You can also slice and toast them.

TO FREEZE: Once cooled you can freeze these rolls – again I recommend refreshing in the microwave once defrosted to serve.

Ingredients

  • 400 g plain gluten free flour, (I use FREEE)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp caster sugar
  • 0.5 tsp xanthan gum
  • 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 large egg, (lightly whisked)
  • 200 ml natural yoghurt, (full fat is best)
  • 100 ml milk
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 130 g grated Cheddar cheese, white cheddar, strong

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 190'C / Fan 170C / Gas Mark 5. Line a baking sheet with a piece of baking paper and set aside.
  • Mix the yoghurt, milk and lemon juice in a bowl and stir. The lemon juice should cause the milk/yoghurt to curdle a little, which is what you’re going for here (ie homemade buttermilk)
  • In a large mixing bowl, add the flour, salt, xanthan gum, sugar and bicarbonate of soda and mix well. Pour in the yoghurt/milk/lemon mixture and then add the egg (which should be whisked just enough to combine the yolk and white).
  • Use a wooden spoon to bring the mixture together into a soft, sticky dough. As it starts to come together add 100g of the grated cheese, and continue to mix with the spoon – then using your hands – to shape it into a ball of dough.
  • Dust the worktop with a sprinkle of gluten free flour and turn out the dough. Divide it into 8, equal-sized portions and roll each piece of dough into a ball.
  • Place the balls of dough onto a baking sheet, around 1-2cm apart. Score an X in the top of each using a sharp knife and sprinkle with the remaining cheese.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden and crisp on top. The bottoms should sound hollow when tapped when they are baked.
  • Remove from the oven and cool for 10-15 minutes before cutting open. Enjoy warm with lots of butter, or dipped in your favourite soup!

Notes

  • To serve: These rolls are best eaten warm, not hot. Cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving.
  • Storing and Freezing: Any leftover rolls are best refreshed in the oven, microwave or air fryer and served warm. You can also freeze them – just defrost and serve warm.
  • To use buttermilk: Omit the yoghurt, milk and lemon juice and simply use 300ml buttermilk instead.
