Notes On This Turkey Bolognese Recipe

🍝 I love a classic gluten free spaghetti bolognese, but this is my leaner version using turkey mince. The same great flavours, but without the red meat.

🍝 This easy turkey bolognese is great for meal prep and batch cooking – it’s so freezer-friendly! A great high protein dinner idea for an easy midweek meal.

🍝 I first published this recipe in 2018 and I still make it all the time! I’ve given it a refresh for October 2026, with new photos, step-by-step images and substitutions.

Ingredients and Substitutions

There’s a printable recipe card below for this easy turkey bolognese recipe with the full quantities. But here are the main ingredients and ideas for any swaps:

  • Turkey Mince: I use lean ground turkey, but you could use a higher-fat turkey thigh mince instead. Chicken mince also works if you prefer the taste.
  • Chopped Tomatoes: I love the Mutti finely chopped tomatoes as they just make the BEST sauce, but any chopped tomatoes work in this recipe.
  • Passata and Tomato Paste: For the rich flavours and a great, sauce texture.
  • Herbs: I recommend dried basil and oregano. A pinch of rosemary can be nice too.
  • Onion and Garlic: A brown or red onion works. You can use fresh minced garlic, chopped garlic or garlic paste.
  • Vegetable Stock Pot: Ensure you use a gluten free stock pot like Knorr.
  • Gluten Free Worcester Sauce: It must be a gluten free Worcester sauce as some contain barley or wheat. You could also use Henderson’s Relish, which is gluten free.

Storing and Freezing Instructions

TO STORE: Any leftover or extra bolognese sauce can be kept in the fridge for up to 3 days and thoroughly reheated to eat. I recommend cooking the pasta fresh.

TO FREEZE: You can also portion up and freeze the turkey bolognese sauce. Reheat from frozen to serve over freshly-cooked gluten free pasta.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 500 g turkey breast mince
  • 400 g tinned chopped tomatoes
  • 250 g passata
  • 70 g tomato puree
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 vegetable stock pot
  • 1 tbsp gluten free Worcester sauce
  • 1 tbsp virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

To serve

Instructions

  • Add the olive oil to a large pan on a low heat. Add the onions, garlic, dried basil and dried oregano and fry for 2-3 minutes gently.
  • Add the turkey mince, turn the heat up to medium/high and fry until starting to brown. You’ll need to stir this well to ensure the mince is broken up and doesn’t clump.
  • Add the chopped tomatoes, passata, tomato puree, Worcester sauce and Bouillon to the pan. Stir well, bring to the boil and then turn the heat down to a gentle simmer. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Leave to simmer gently while you cook the pasta.
  • Add the gluten free pasta to salted, boiling water and cook as per the instructions – usually 10-12 minutes. Once cooked, drain and set aside.
  • Remove the turkey from the heat. Serve the pasta into bowls and divide the sauce equally between servings. Top with ripped fresh basil leaves and grated parmesan.

Notes

  • Any leftovers can be kept in the fridge for up to 3 days or frozen. Reheat thoroughly to serve with freshly-cooked pasta.
