There’s no doubt that gluten free foods are expensive. It always seems like you pay a premium if you have coeliac disease to be able to enjoy the ‘luxuries’ of bread, cakes, crumpets or pasta. It all seems very unfair – which is perhaps why the news Aldi is stocking gluten free products as of today is so exciting.

And the discount supermarket is claiming its gluten free range, including brands such as Nestle, Trek, Genius and Mrs Crimble’s, offers customers an average saving of 40 per cent. Typically, Aldi says, its free-from basket is up to 20 per cent cheaper than Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Ocado.

So what sort of foods are in the range – and what are the savings? The lovely Saara over at Gluten Free Student Cookbook has put together this great list on her blog of how the prices compare to Sainsbury’s.

As you can see, you can save quite a bit of cash. For example, the range of 19 products can see savings of more than £1 on some products compared to other supermarkets. Is this because the range is limited – it will only be on sale from today (May 12) until stocks last – or are we being ripped off day-to-day?

According to Aldi, a price check carried out on price comparison site mysupermarket.co.uk revealed that a loaf of Genius seeded bread purchased at Aldi during Coeliac Awareness Week will be  £1.11 cheaper than at Sainsbury’s, Ocado and Tesco, while Genius Gluten Free pancakes and crumpets will each be 51p cheaper, when compared to Asda.

Tony Baines, joint managing director of Aldi corporate buying, said: “At Aldi, we are proud to offer our customers an affordable gluten-free basket and are pleased to be able to support them with a wide range of products to meet their dietary and lifestyle needs.”
