There’s something ridiculously comforting about a mug of gluten free tomato soup, don’t you think?

Rich and tasty, my tomato soup recipe is seriously easy to make and I’ve added a little twist which I think takes it up a notch.

I’ve pimped this classic soup recipe with some harissa paste to give it a delicious, smoky undertone and a slight kick.

The harissa paste really takes this tomato soup up a notch – you can leave it out for a more ‘classic’ recipe but I really recommend trying it.

In fact, this homemade tomato soup is the perfect quick and easy gluten free lunch.

It only takes about 10 minutes to make and I’ve made it with storecupboard ingredients to keep it really speedy and simple.

It’s the best recipe for a cold Sunday afternoon, and lovely served with a warm, crusty gluten free baguette for dipping.

This gluten free tomato soup recipe is also really cheap to make – all you need is tinned tomatoes and a few extra bits such as gluten free stock.

Plus it’s dairy free too (if you omit the optional swirl of sour cream on top).

Ingredients

There’s a full ingredients list with the quantities in the recipe card below, but here’s a little on some of them and any variations.

  • Virgin Olive Oil: You can use any oil you like for this but I do just love the flavour of olive oil when it comes to recipes like soup.
  • Chopped Garlic: I always tend to have chopped frozen garlic in stock in the freezer because I am inherently lazy and it saves so much time and effort. That being said, you could use fresh garlic or those ‘lazy’ jars of garlic instead.
  • Tinned Peeled Plum Tomatoes: I used to make tomato soup with fresh tomatoes until I realised using tinned tomatoes was so much CHEAPER and easier! Using peeled plum tomatoes gives this soup a real richness, but you could substitute for the same amount of fresh tomatoes if you have a glut in the garden to use up.
  • Vegetable Stock: It’s important to double check stock cubes as a lot of them contain wheat flour and are not gluten free. I always use Knorr vegetable stock cubes but I have a list of lots of gluten free stock cube options here. Feel free to use chicken stock if you’d rather and you don’t need it to be vegan/vegetarian.
  • Harissa Paste: This is easily found in the supermarket with the spice mixes and TRUST ME, you’re going to want to try it! It gives a lovely, smoky, peppery taste to the soup in a subtle way – as well as a lovely warming kick. I’m obsessed!

I top my soup with gluten free croutons (recipe coming ASAP!) and a swirl of sour cream.

You could use crème fraîche if you like instead or just omit it completely if you need this recipe to be dairy free or vegan.

How to make gluten free tomato soup

Making this gluten free tomato soup recipe honestly couldn’t be any easier!

First of all fry off the onion and garlic, and then add the tinned tomatoes, tomato puree and harissa paste.

Pour in the vegetable stock and then leave it to simmer before blending with a hand blender (otherwise known as an immersion blender).

I use my stick blender for this but you could also use a jug-blender to make a smooth soup if you prefer.

Just make sure you are careful if using a non-stick saucepan!

Making this a ‘canned tomato soup’ just makes it so much easier as they blend a lot easier without any sneaky bits of tomato skin avoiding the blender.

If you are using fresh tomatoes then just make sure you blend the mixture really well and remove any stalky bits first.

And if you really don’t want to use harissa paste in this recipe you can easily omit it or try using a dash of balsamic vinegar instead.

Once heated, leave any spare soup to cool before keeping in the fridge or freezing in portions ready for when you need some comfort food.

Gluten free tomato soup recipe

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes

This gluten free tomato soup recipe is like a hug in a mug and the dollop of harissa paste gives it a lovely little kick and smoky flavours. A dairy free recipe perfect for a gluten free lunch - serve it with my crunchy gluten free croutons.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp virgin olive oil
  • 1 red onion (finely chopped)
  • 3 tsp chopped garlic
  • 2 x 400g tins of peeled plum tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato puree
  • 500ml gluten free vegetable stock
  • 2 heaped tsp harissa paste

To serve:

  • Gluten free croutons
  • Sour cream
  • Fresh chopped parsley or basil

Instructions

  1. Add the olive oil to a large pan and place on a low heat. Add the onions and garlic and cook on a medium heat for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to soften.
  2. Add the tinned tomatoes, tomato puree and harissa paste. Stir well then pour in the vegetable stock (top tip - use some of the stock to swill any leftover juices from the tomato tins and add to the mix so you don't waste any!).
  3. Bring the mix to a boil, place the lid on and turn down to a simmer. Leave for 8-10 minutes, then remove from the heat and leave to cool for 5 minutes before using a hand blender to blitz the soup until smooth.
  4. Serve with a swirl of sour cream (if desired!), freshly chopped herbs and a handful of gluten free croutons.

Notes

This soup can be made ahead of time and kept in the fridge for up to 5 days. You can also freeze it - I recommend doing this in portions and heating from frozen when needed.

If you don't like any spice at all, you can omit the harissa paste. A dash of balsamic vinegar makes a nice alternative for a deeper flavour without any spice!

  1. I make my soup very similar to yours. I sometimes add a smoked bacon medallion. It gives you a lovely smoked Tomato soup.
