These easy Homemade Air Fryer Chips are crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and perfect for whipping up in under 30 minutes. You only need potatoes, a little oil and some salt to make the BEST homemade chips in the air fryer. Plus they’re gluten free and vegan!

These Homemade Air Fryer Chips Are So EASY!
- Completely Faff-Free! Peeling potatoes? Par-boiling or soaking your chips before frying? NO THANKS. I developed this homemade air fryer chips recipe to be THE easiest method. Simply chop up your spuds, coat in oil and air fry. I’ve tested all the weird and wacky ways you can air fry chips so you don’t have to and this is honestly the easiest and the best.
- Top Tip: Using an air fryer for cooking chips means using a lot less oil than deep frying. But you still need a little bit of oil when air frying chips to get that gorgeous crispy outside – so don’t try omit it entirely.
- Potato of choice: I highly recommend using a floury potato like King Edwards (my fave) or Maris Pipers in the UK – or Yukon Golds in the US. They will produce a much better chip, trust me!
- Serving Suggestions: These easy air fryer chips are perfect for serving with gluten free fish goujons, chip shop curry sauce, or even air fryer fried chicken. Enjoy them with a gluten free pie or gluten free lasagne, or smother them with homemade chilli con carne and guacamole for delicious Loaded Fries.

Ingredients and Substitutions
Despite most supermarket frozen chips having all sorts of weird and wonderful coatings (which often aren’t gluten free) you actually only need 3 ingredients to make the best chips:
- Potatoes: Opt for a floury potato like Maris Piper or my favourites, King Edwards. Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes are also god options.
- Oil: Use a neutral oil with a high smoking point like vegetable or avocado oil. You can also use a ‘light’ spray oil – but be liberal with it!
- Salt: I always add salt to my chips when coating them, it brings out the flavour.
How to Make Chips in Air Fryer
There’s a printable recipe card below with the method. But here are some step-by-step photos to show you how to make chips in the air fryer.
Leaving the skin on, cut the potatoes in 1cm strips. Place them in a large bowl, drizzle over the oil and a sprinkle of salt, then toss to coat.
Spread the chips in one even layer in the air fryer basket – I have a Ninja dual air fryer with two drawers so I split it between the two.
If you only have a small air fryer you may need to do this in batches, as the chips need space to ensure they go nice and crispy!
Air fry at 200C/392F for 10 minutes, toss the basket to turn the chips, then air fry for a further 10 minutes at 200C/392F until golden and crispy. Serve straight away.
Recipe Tip
Want to mix up your fries? You can easily flavour your fries before air frying them! Try using rosemary for delicious Honest Burger-style rosemary salted fries. Sprinkle in Peri Peri Salt or Cajun seasoning for spicy fries. Or add a little smoked paprika and garlic powder for a smoky variety. The choices are endless!
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some FAQs about this homemade air fryer chips recipe. If you can’t find the answer to your question here or in the post above, please comment and I’ll try answer!
No, you don’t! I tried soaking and drying my chips before air fryer and it didn’t make any difference. I also thought that par-boiling the chips just added an extra, unnecessary step that didn’t improve the finished chip at all. When I make chips in the air fryer I’m doing it for convenience – hence this simple, speedy recipe!
It’s really important not to overcrowd the air fryer drawer – these chips need their space! Allowing them to be spaced out means they go nice and crispy. If they are too packed in they will just steam instead of frying and stay soggy. If necessary, fry them in batches.
Yes, you can! Simply use my gluten free oven chips recipe instead for crispy, skin-on fries made in the oven.

Instructions
- Leaving the skin on, cut the potatoes in 1cm strips. Place them in a large bowl, drizzle over the oil and a sprinkle of salt, then toss to coat.
- Spread the chips in one even layer in the air fryer basket – I have a dual air fryer with two drawers so I split it between the two. If you only have a small air fryer you may need to do this in batches, as the chips need space to ensure they go nice and crispy!
- Air fry at 200C/392F for 10 minutes, toss the basket to turn the chips, then air fry for a further 10 minutes at 200C/392F until golden and crispy. Serve straight away with your favourite meal.
Notes
- Storing: I recommend cooking these chips fresh each time. However, you can get ahead by prepping the potatoes and coating in oil, then refrigerating up to 24 hours before frying them.
- Peeling Potatoes: I never peel my potatoes as I love the more rustic look of skin-on fries, and personally I love the skin so don’t want to waste it! But you can peel your potatoes before chopping if you prefer.
- A Note On Chip Size: I cut my chips around 1cm thick. Thicker chips may take longer to cook, likewise thinner chips may not need to much time. Don’t be afraid to open the air fryer and check them occasionally if you’re unsure.
